Terrestrial Effects of Nearby Supernovae: Updated Modeling

چکیده
Abstract We have reevaluated recent studies of the effects on Earth by cosmic rays (CRs) from nearby supernovae (SNe) at 100 and 50 pc, in diffusive transport CR case, here including an early-time suppression lower energies neglected previous works. Inclusion this leads to overall fluxes early times, atmospheric ionization, smaller resulting ozone depletion, sea-level muon radiation doses. Differences impacts are most pronounced for pc case with less significant differences case. find a greater discrepancy modeled dose, significantly dose values case; our results indicate it is unlikely that threat biosphere SNe beyond 20 also performed new modeling SN CRs 10 pc. Overall, that, considering only CRs, “lethal” distance should be closer rather than typically quoted 8–10 Recent work extended X-ray emission indicates out therefore now strong increasing standard lethal least This has implications history life as well considerations habitability Galaxy.

Terrestrial effects of moderately nearby supernovae
Recent data indicate one or more moderately nearby supernovae in the early Pleistocene, with additional events likely in the Miocene. This has motivated more detailed computations, using new information about the nature of supernovae and the distances of these events to describe in more detail the sorts of effects that are indicated at the Earth. This short communication/review is designed to d...
متن کاملTerrestrial Effects Of Nearby Supernovae In The Early Pleistocene
Recent results have strongly confirmed that multiple supernovae happened at distances ~100 pc consisting of two main events: one at 1.7 to 3.2 million years ago, and the other at 6.5 to 8.7 million years ago. These events are said to be responsible for excavating the Local Bubble in the interstellar medium and depositing Fe on Earth and the Moon. Other events are indicated by effects in the loc...
متن کاملOzone Depletion from Nearby Supernovae
Estimates made in the 1970’s indicated that a supernova occurring within tens of parsecs of Earth could have significant effects on the ozone layer. Since that time improved tools for detailed modeling of atmospheric chemistry have been developed to calculate ozone depletion, and advances have been made also in theoretical modeling of supernovae and of the resultant gamma-ray spectra. In additi...
متن کاملThe Risetime of Nearby Type Ia Supernovae
We present calibrated photometric measurements of the earliest detections of nearby type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). The set of ∼30 new, unfiltered CCD observations delineate the early rise behavior of SNe Ia > 18 to 10 days before maximum. Using simple empirical models, we demonstrate the strong correlation between the risetime (i.e., the time between explosion and maximum), the post-rise light-cu...
متن کاملA Nearby Supernovae Search : Eros 2
Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) have been used as approximate standard candles to measure cosmological parameters such as the Hubble constant and the deceleration parameter. These measurements rely on empirical correlations between peak luminosities and other features that can be observed in the supernovae spectra and their light curves. Such correlations deserve further study since they have been es...
